Today, I am talking about something I know we all deal with- STRESS! Whether it’s related to your job, relationships, finances, etc, I know that most of us likely have something going on in our lives that causes anxiety/stress. Today, I wanted to share how I deal with stress and the methods I have found that work!
1. Talk to Somone: Okay, Scott may be my husband, but sometimes a girl just needs to talk to her mom! Whenever I am dealing with something stressful, I immediately call my mom to tell her all about it- I don’t know what it is about talking through a situation, but it always makes me feel better. My mom should really start charging me for therapy sessions haha! She offers such good advice and usually makes me see the situation from a different perspective. I appreciate her listening to me and always offering me her words of wisdom. So, find that person that you can talk things over with- it doesn’t have to be a parent- it could be a friend, sibling, or significant other!
2. Take Care of Yourself: Okay, sometimes when I am dealing with a stressful situation, I just want to go to Sonic/Wendy’s/Chick-Fil-A and drown my feelings with some fast food. But, I know that this isn’t healthy, so I tend to avoid doing this 99% of the time (there’s always that 1% though haha!). When your body is under stress, the best thing you can do is to get enough sleep at night, drink plenty of fluids during the day, and try to focus on eating healthy and being active. All of these things benefit your body and can help to counteract the negative effects of stress.
3. Listen to Music: Okay, I love doing this and certain music can instantly put me in a better mood. You know how certain songs may hold a specific memory for you? Like if you listen to a certain song, it immediately takes you back to that place and time when you first heard it? For me, songs from the early 2000s (my middle school and high school days) will typically put me in a better mood and distract me from stressful events in my life. Give me some old school rap, pop, or punk-rock, and you’ve made me one happy gal. I’ll turn the volume wayyy up and just lose myself in the music, focusing on the words and singing (poorly, I may add). And, for those moments that I am focused on the song, I’m no longer thinking about what’s stressing me out!
4. Take a Moment: I know most of us lead pretty stressful lives balancing work, home, relationships, kids, etc… so every once in a while, it is important to take time for yourself! For me, being alone and having time to myself really helps me de-stress. In particular (and no judging!), I sometimes just lay in bed and go through my DVR and catch up on my favorite shows. During work, I am constantly interacting with children and their parents, so sometimes it is nice to come home and not have to talk to anyone. I will literally tell Scott that I need an hour or two by myself- he doesn’t typically mind because he will go play video games or watch hunting videos haha! But I really do find it so relaxing to distract myself with some RHONY and their ridiculousness- then I look at my life and think, man at least I’m not dealing with their crazy drama!
5. Work Out: Okay, I feel like this last one is quite obvious, but it’s one that I definitely under-utilize. Working out and focusing all your energy into a physical activity can definitely help to distract you from stress while also helping you to look better physically. And, as the great Elle Woods’ said, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people don’t shoot their husbands.” HAHA. I must say that I definitely feel happier after I work out, so she is definitely onto something. I think that actually getting to the gym is 90% of the battle, but once you’re there, it is easy to complete a work out.
How do you deal with stress? I hope this list helps give you ideas on how to de-stress and work through things you may be dealing with! As always thank you for reading and sharing-I appreciate you more than you’ll ever know! -A
