A few weeks ago, my mom kept bugging me about making ice cream together and sharing the recipe with you all. I told her that although it would be a fun recipe to make, I didn’t feel like many people have ice cream makers at home haha! I ended up taking a poll and I was right- I think only 30% of you guys have ice cream makers- but I received so many messages saying that even though you don’t have an ice cream maker, you still would love to see the recipe!
Today, my mom and I will each be making a different ice cream recipe- she is making vanilla with M&M candy and I am making plain vanilla- boring, I know. I plan on dressing it up with sprinkles and chocolate sauce!
First things first- if you don’t have an ice cream maker at home, but want to still try this recipe, you can use a coffee tin. I found a recipe here that walks you through how to do it!
If you are in the market for an ice cream maker here are two I recommend:
I have the Kitchenaid mixer ice cream attachment and absolutely love it- keep in mind that you must have a Kitchenaid mixer in order to use this. The other ice cream maker is from Cusinart and is on major sale- no Kitchenaid mixer required! I will link both below!
Let’s talk about recipes! There are SO many different ones you can make- the ideas are endless! Here is our favorite vanilla ice cream recipe- my mom just adds M&Ms to hers!
Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream
Ingredients (yields 1 qt)
- 2 cups of heavy cream
- 2 cups of whole milk
- 3/4 cups of sugar
- 2 tbsp. vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Directions
- Mix ingredients and pour into ice cream freezer container.
- Process recipe according to freezer directions.
- Additions can be made to this recipe: add fruit, chocolate, chocolate chips, or nuts as desired.
This vanilla recipe is a great one to start with and then you can add in all the fun flavors- fruit, Oreos, cookie dough, candy, etc. Like I said before, the ideas are endless! I also think this is a fun recipe that the kiddos may enjoying helping you with too!
Nina’s Homemade Ice Cream with M&M’s
- 3 cups heavy whipping cream
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/4 cup Carnation malted milk (plain or chocolate)
- crushed M&M’s
- Mix ingredients and pour into ice cream freezer container.
- Process recipe according to freezer directions.
- Additions can be made to this recipe: add fruit, chocolate, chocolate chips, or nuts as desired.
One thing to note is that after you mix these ingredients in the ice cream machine (usually it’s for approximately 20 minutes) the ice cream mixture is still pretty thin and liquid-y. You then place the mixture in the freezer and freeze until desired consistency- make sure you allot for this as far as time. *Currently, we are waiting for our ice cream to harden up a bit- I post photos once complete haha!
I hope you all enjoy this recipes! They are perfect for summer!
