One of my dreams was to eventually have a home with some type of bookcase- I think I always envisioned being Belle in some huge library with a ladder, but hey- you take what you can get!
When we first moved into this home, I was unsure how to style this bookcase. There were so many shelves and this blank space just stared back at me. I wanted to find lots of books and items to fill up the space quickly, but I have learned that this is a process and that finding items to fit this space will take time.
Today, I wanted to share with you all my tips for styling a bookcase and how I have styled ours so far- I still want to add a few things/mix it up, but overall I am happy with my progress.
First tip- Choose some sort of color palette. Let’s be real- there are a bazillion things you could put up on shelves, but I decided to try to stick to a color scheme of black, white, tan, and green for this space. Having a specific color scheme makes it easier to only focus on items/books that fit the scheme- and it keeps you from buying things you don’t need!
Second tip- Go to your local thrift/antique store to find books. I found most of these books at Gas Lamp Antiques in Nashville. If you’re local, you definitely need to check this place out! They have so many neat booths and literally have an entire room full of books! I looked like a crazy person the day I went- I was only looking for books that would fit my color scheme and was pulling book covers off checking all the books. I know they were probably like what is this girl doing?! Anyways, most of the books cost anywhere from $3-$10, so overall I didn’t end up spending too much for the antique books.
Third tip- Add a personal touch. I placed four black and white framed family photos throughout the bookcase as I feel like it makes the space a little more homey. We received a really neat wedding gift that I also display- it’s our wedding invitation printed onto this gorgeous cream-colored stone. It looks so pretty in the space and has a soft spot in my heart.
Fourth tip- Do not spend a ton of money on “fillers.” After I placed the books and photo frames were I wanted them, I realized I still had a ton of empty space on the shelves. Here’s where the “fillers” come in- these can be little trinkets, small plants, candles, etc. All of these items can be found at your local Target, Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, Home Goods, or TJ Maxx. Remember to look for items that fit your color scheme!
Overall, I am happy with the styling of our bookcase, but I am sure that I will want to change it up eventually- don’t tell my hubs that! I hope this gives you all some inspiration in your own space! As always, thank you for reading and sharing! -A
